Bishop Carlos Duarte Costa
The Catholic Apostolic Church of Brazil (ICAB) has its origins with Bishop Carlos Duarte Costa, a Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Botucatu, Brazil. He was consecrated on December 8, 1924 and established ICAB on July 6, 1945. He never abandoned neither the faith, nor the theology, nor the sound tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. He loved very deeply the Sacraments and the Liturgy of the Church to the point that he insisted that the matter and form of the administration of the Sacraments should never be altered in order to ensure its validity. The Catholic Apostolic Church North America (ICAB American Mission) was established in the US to serve as a missionary organization under the supervision and direction of the governing council and in keeping with the norms and regulations as stated in the Canonical Code of ICAB.
To live deeply and propagate to its fullest the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ, preaching the kerygma, the "Good News", in all forms and ways, within the territory of the United States of America, teaching the faithful and guarding the doctrine and practices of the Catholic Church as defined in Sacred Scriptures.
To celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Matrimony, Anointing of the Sick and Holy Orders as directed an prescribed by Catholic Tradition and by the Canonical Code of Law of ICAB.
To promote educational services and programs at all levels using all available modalities, especially those programs that encompass Christian religious education.
To promote assistance programs aimed at the development of Christian virtues and social well-being for all peoples in need.
To support beneficent works and programs aimed at assisting the community at large.
To provide religious support in an ecumenical atmosphere centered in the Catholic Faith, particularly to those individuals who may be disenfranchised because of language or cultural differences, and to those who are separated from their local parishes because of illness, hospitalization or other factors.
The ultimate goal of the Catholic Apostolic Church North America is to assist in leading the People of God to become the salt of the earth and the light of the world. This is a most sure seed of unity, hope and salvation for the whole human race.
The Catholic Apostolic Church is not a political institution and its sole mission is to be faithful to the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ and His doctrine.
Our Apostolic Sucession
To simplify the presentation of our apostolic roots, we'll begin by mentioning that Pope Leo the XIII had as Secretary of State Cardinal Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro.
Cardenal Rampolla
Cardinal Rampolla, was consecrated bishop on December 8, 1882 by the imposition of hands of Cardinal Edward Henry Howard. He consecrated, on October 26, 1890, as bishop of Goias, Brazil, Domingo Joaquim Arcoverde Albuquerque, who later was bishop of Sao Paulo and then archbishop of Rio de Janeiro. Elevated to cardinal on December 11, 1905, he became the first cardinal of Latin America.
Domingo Joaquim Arcoverde Albuquerque
Cardinal Arcoverde de Albuquerque, on June 24, 1911 consecrated as Bishop Sebastiao Leme da Silveira Cintra, who later became archbishop of Rio de Janeiro and cardinal of the Roman Church.
Sebastiao Leme da Silveira Cintra
Cardinal Sebastiao Leme, by the laying on of hands, consecrated as Bishop Dom Carlos Duarte Costa, on December 8, 1924. Dom Carlos from July 6, 1945, answering to the call of the Lord, began organizing the Catholic Apostolic Church of Brazil.
Carlos Duarte Costa
The concept of Apostolic Succession of the Catholic Apostolic Church North America comes from the Apostolic Tradition and the practice of the undivided Church. Apostolic Tradition, the local church is the visible reality where the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church becomes sacramentally present; finding his sacramental summit in the Eucharistic celebration.
The local church has to be structured in a synodical and participatory form, with diversity of charismas and ministries. Among these, there is the ordained ministry and the bishop is recognized as the visible sign of the unity of the local Church and the bond of communion with the Universal Church.
Without the People of God consistently organized and chaired by a Bishop, actually it does not exist a local Church and as a result, there is not sacramental presence of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
The roll recognized to the bishop, is due to the fact that he is considered as successor of the Apostles. The first criteria that gives legitimacy and apostolic validity to the episcopate, is the fact that the same local Church, formed by the People of God, together with his presbytery, in an atmosphere of prayer and discernment, proceeds to the election of the man who, according to their “sensus fidei”, has received the charisma to exercise the ministry of bishop.
After the election is made by the local Church, the same has to be recognized and endorsed by the bishops of other local churches that are nearby. Through this process, the link with the historic episcopate is established. This is known as the transmission of the "APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION".
That implies that the elected bishop is ordained by other bishops who, in turn, have been ordained by other bishops and whose origins date back to the same apostles. Through the recognition and ratification of the election and the subsequent consecration, the elected bishop becomes part of the college of bishops, and by that, the local church enters in communion with the universal Church.
If any of these steps is not observed, the historical bond of apostolic succession loses its original and genuine meaning and it’s seriously questionable if actually, the historical bond with the Apostolic Tradition is established.
Through Dom Carlos Duarte Costa, we have received the "Apostolic Succession" transmitted by the Roman Catholic Church.
